Get Started (Windows / StatFi)

On the Windows platform, you can perform an analysis from a standalone spreadsheet app or using StatFi (Excel add‑in). StatFi (StatPlus for Microsoft Excel) runs as an add-in for Microsoft Excel™ (supported versions: 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019) app.

Hint Migration guide for Excel Analysis Toolpak (ATP) users is available here.

To perform an analysis, please follow these steps:

  • Launch standalone app (StatPlus) or Excel

All the data analysis commands are available from the standalone app main menu or from the StatFi ribbon in the Excel app. The StatFi ribbon is available on the right side of the Excel ribbon and provides access to the statistics commands.

Hint Both the standalone app and the Excel add-in include the ability to quickly repeat a data analysis using the Recent and Favorites menus. The Recent menu allows you to quickly repeat one of the last twenty commands (you can change input variables and command options, if necessary). The Favorites menu allows you to recall saved commands.

  • Open a dataset

For the standalone spreadsheet - use the File→Open command to open a dataset, or open a dataset with Microsoft Excel. Sample datasets are available here. You can also open a dataset from a command help page, when available.
  • Run a command

Run the Basic Statistics→Descriptive Statistics command from the StatFi ribbon or from the Statistics menu of the standalone app.
  • Select input variables for analysis

To select input variables (cell range, column or several columns) for the command you can either use the list of variables (columns) or the button in the range input field.

    a) Select columns with variables from the list.
This way, you can quickly select non-adjacent columns and columns with thousands of rows.
    b) Select a range.
This way, you can select any range of cells, such as B2:F35 or F4:M61.
Click the button in the input field.

An Excel window will be activated, and you will be able to select a range.

Select the range as shown in the figure and click the button at the right side of the input field to return to the data input dialog. The selected range will be used as the data source for the Descriptive Statistics command.

Please be sure to select a range with labels if the "Labels In First Row" option is selected.

If you selected the wrong range or column - click the Clear button to clear the input field.

Regardless of the way you selected variables - please check if the Labels in first row option has the correct value. If the data range has no labels (headers) in the first row - uncheck this option.

  • Set the command-specific options

To add a histogram to the Descriptive Statistics report, check the Plot histogram option in the Options panel.

These options vary depending on the selected command. To reset the options to default values - click the Reset Options button.
  • Preferences and formatting

If you want to change the default font for reports, default alpha value, or how missing values are removed, use the Preferences button to open the app's preferences dialog. Details for each item of the Preferences dialog box are covered here.

  • Save as favorite

You can save time by adding your most frequent commands to the Favorites menu: use the Favorites→Save Analysis As command and both the command options and the data source will be saved for later use.

At a future time, simply select a saved command from the Favorites menu to recall the command, all the input parameters and options, and automatically open the workbook used as the data source. Favorites and Recent menu items are shared between the Excel add-in and the standalone spreadsheet.

HintYou can add any StatFi menu or command to the Quick Access Toolbar: click the right button on a menu or command and select the "Add to Quick Access Toolbar".

Here is how the Favorites and Regression menus look in the Quick Access Toolbar, at the uppermost left corner of the screen, just above the File menu.
